Tips on How to Change Your Name

Every girl deals with the big decision of whether or not to change your name. Is too old fashioned? Or do you like the idea of being “Mr & Mrs XXXX”. It’s really a personal decision and completely up to you. But once you’ve decided to change your name, whats next? Well – heres the low down on what to expect.

Once you get married – it takes 3 to 6 months for your marriage license to come in the mail, so enjoy your old name for a bit more while you can. Once your marriage license comes in the mail, have a celebratory dinner – it’s official!! And then.. you have quite a few things to get done…  Here’s a list I gathered which is very informative and to the point from About.com.

How to change your name when you get married

As with so many legal matters, the rules change by municipality, so check with your local city hall. But generally, the steps you should take are:

Before the wedding

  • Tell your job so they can start the process of changing your email address, and your business cards.
  • Tell your bridesmaids and family that you’re changing it, just in case anyone checks with them before getting anything monogrammed.
  • Make your honeymoon reservations using yourMAIDEN name. You won’t have a passport or drivers license in your new name yet, so you’ll need your tickets to match your documentation.

After the wedding

  • Get a new social security card
Once you get your marriage license (which usually takes a couple of weeks to arrive in the mail), download a form from the Social Security website. Then take that completed form, the license and your identification to your local social security office to get a new card. (if you’ve gotten creative with your last name, you may also need to go through more formal name change procedures.)
  • Get a new drivers license
You’ll also want to change your name on the other main form of identification – your drivers license. Most DMVs will change it with a copy of a marriage certificate, although others require you to wait until your social security card has been changed. Check with your local DMV for their rules.
  • Change that paperwork
Visit your office’s HR department again with your new social security card to change your name on financial information, including your tax deductions. You’ll want to be credited properly with those deductions come tax time, and with your social security contributions when you retire. For everyone else, including bank, insurance policies, credit cards, utilities, creditors, and membership organizations, type up a letter with all of your information on it, including name, address, new name, account number, and possibly your social security number, and include a copy of your marriage license. No one should charge you money to change your name. To help keep your organized, here’s a printable name change checklist.Don’t forget to order new checks and credit cards!
  • Start using it
It will sound a little funny at first, but as you start using your new last name, everyone else will catch on. Don’t be afraid to courteously correct people when they erroneously use your maiden name.

Dwaynette and Travis 2.19.12

Best Day Ever Hawaii would like to give a big C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to Dwaynette and Travis who tied the knot on February 19th, 2012. Ceremony was held at the beautiful Crystal Chapel at the Hilton Hawaiian Village – Waikiki and the reception took place at the Ala Moana Hotel.

From the bride: “We met at a rave in 1999. lol. Oooh, He can dance good! I remember saying to a friend. But he never asked for my number until years later. We were always attracted to each other, but always dating someone else. Then finally in 2004 he gave me his number. But.. it wasn’t until way later in 2010, when we were really ready to make it work” . For the whole LOVE story – check out www.HawaiiLoveStories.com.

Photography was done by Bianca from Bianca Photography. “Bianca is so easy to work with. She knows how to take charge and command a group. She makes sure she gets her shots and does it all in such a fun and easy way. I don’t think anyone else could have gotten all of those shots in that short amount of time with that many people except for her.” Dways bridesmaid said.

Floral arrangements by Todd at Always Flowers 808. “Todd is so easy to work with – He always calls back and responds really quickly to emails – I love that! Plus he’s really good and inexpensive! I would totally recommend him” The bride said.

Deejay and Sounds – Nick & Canan. “Nick spins at Bar 35, so you’ve herd his mixes. I like his style! We always use the two of them for all our friends functions!” And Canan is the Grooms brother in law.

Videographers – Video 21 – Davis & Janis did an amazing job. Video 21 was so professional and their day of edit was perfect! “They are awesome” Dwaynette commented.

Favors were Kiawe Salts – tied in a Japanese knot with magenta and purple fabric.. complete with cute wooden spoons. And their theme of Cherry Blossoms, magenta and plum was carried throughout the reception through the table set up as well as the gorgeous cake. Uplighting set the mood and Taiko Drummers started the night off with a bang. Congrats Dway & Trav.. everything was absolutely perfect!

The rehersal.. Not sure whats going on this last one. Do a “funny pose” they said – and this is what happened.

Share the Aloha 2.20.12

Erika and I just finished a big Hawaii Outdoor Beach Wedding for a beautiful couple Mary Despe & Tony Perrault on February 18th, 2012. Mary and Tony were gracious enough to join in our efforts to bring a smile to those who could use a little day brightening and donate a bunch of their centerpieces to four of Manoa Senior Care Homes and Kapiolani Medical Center (childrens cancer floor). On the day after their Wedding we spent the morning re-freshening their floral arrangements and writing cards for the seniors and kids signed from “Best Day Ever” and Mary & Tony. We then drove the florals over to the four senior care homes and met so many wonderful new friends. I will honestly say it was just an amazing experience. They were all gleaming… they were SO happy!  Here are some of the photos.waikane wedding, hawaii wedding, oahu wedding, mary and tony, best day ever hawaii, outdoor wedding

It took a few hours to freshen up the florals that got a bit wind blown from the Hawaii Beach Wedding, but it was well worth it!

One of the residents at Manoa Senior Care was so happy to get the the flowers with her personalized card that when she hugged me, she held on and wouldn’t let go… Then I realized she was crying. Tears of joy! She had to keep lifting up her glasses to wipe her eyes. I will admit to tearing up as well. One little vase of flowers made her so happy. Really makes you appreciate the little things in life:)

I spent some time with Helen from Manoa Senior Care, she was so excited she kept saying “WoWiE. WoWie. wOwie!” and kept making these funny faces, filled with excitement that she had visitors AND flowers!

Meanwhile, Erika was hanging out with Jane. Jane promised to change the water and freshen up the flowers daily. She said she would check on her roommates flowers as well. How cute! She also ran outside of the house to wave goodbye to us and thank us for visiting! We’ll be back Jane:)

And then there was Yuki. Yuki who “Loves Flowers” said she would make sure her arrangement lasted for two weeks. She even stopped playing Sodoku to pose for a photo and give me a hug. I love grandma hugs. They squeeze your hand as and hug you really tightly as though to let you know they love you.. without words.

We also made a special trip to Kapiolani Medical Center and left the florals with Lisa Chung. We were told that the arrangements would go to special children on the cancer floor who needed a little cheering up. Unfortunately due to privacy rules, we could not visit or take photos. But – We are sure that the kids who received the special flowers and cards did have a big smile for the rest of the day. A special thanks to Mary and Tony for donating many of their beautiful centerpieces!

If anyone else would like to donate some of their floral arrangements to our “Share the Aloha” project, we would be happy to pick them up and make special visits for you. Click here to learn more about “Share the Aloha”. We always post photos and will let you know exactly who you are bringing a BIG smile to. PS>You do not have to be our client to donate florals:)

Q&A: What are your suggestions for a bridal shower venue on Oahu?

2.22.12

Hi Nicole & Erika,

Do you have any suggestions for a bridal shower venue??

Sincerely,
Diana

Hi Diana,

Bridal showers can be at a friend or family members home.. or at a restaurant. Most restaurants will allow you to have a section or room for your shower as long as you contact them ahead of time. There is often a minimum food/drink fee.. but you can ask your guests to chip in. Generally you would have your bridesmaids plan this event for you or your Hawaii Wedding Planner. Here are a few suggestions on places to have bridal showers on OAHU:

Waioli Tea Room: Cute, restaurant in the back of Manoa Valley that has a really pretty atmosphere and will allow you to have an entire room in the back for your party. The food is very good as well. This is one of my favorites!

Tikis Waikiki – Beautiful ocean view – good food – they let you decorate and will section of a part of the restaurant for your party

tikis waikiki, tikis lava room, bridal shower, waikiki

Lulus Waikiki – Same thing – great view.. good food – decorations are allowed and they will let you have a section for your shower.

waikiki, lulus waikiki, bridal shower

Mariposa – Located in Ala Moana (inside Neiman Marcus) – this place has the best food (and amazing popovers w/strawberry butter baked fresh daily) – a little pricier but also a great view and wonderful place for a shower.

The Pagoda – Their buffet is amazing. Think crab legs, fresh poki, sushi, shrimp tempura, prime rib, and more.. plus an entire dessert bar complete with hot azuki beans and mochi balls and a soft serve machine. Plus, they will let you bring in table decorations. You can even request a pagoda on the Koi pond if your group is not too big. A great place for a shower.

Yogur Story – Keeamoku St. – Cute atmosphere, a little cozier in feel than some of the other larger places, good food – and they do let you decorate. Just make sure to make reservations ahead of time. Parking can be tricky though.

Hope that helps some:)

Q&A. Are wedding wish/sky lanterns allowed in Hawaii?

Hawaii Wedding Question of the Day… Are Wish/Sky Lanterns Allowed in Hawaii? Any bride who’s done a little research has seen/herd of these lanterns. Beautiful.. and a really fun way to get your guests involved. The idea is that every guest lights one of these large biodegradable lanterns and lets them fly off into the sky and makes a wish for the couple.. But are they allowed in Hawaii??

Hi Diana,
I know how beautiful sky lanterns are.. I actually really wanted to use them for my wedding. But, because of the tradewinds in Hawaii, they are very dangerous and could potentially start a big brush fire. The state of Hawaii is in process of banning them & the bill is just about passed (see article below). We would strongly advise against sky/wish lanterns.. in Hawaii. Sorry:(

Share the Aloha

Best Day Ever Hawaii is pleased to announce our new charity program “Share the Aloha”. In an effort to become more connected with our local community and to help to make a difference in those less fortunate, sick, or just a little lonely…  we are working together with Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children & Manoa Senior Care, to aid in bringing a little sunshine to those who could really use a smile.

share the aloha, best day ever hawaii, flower donations, wedding flower donations

Heres the idea: Every month we work several local and out of town couples to bring their “Best Day Ever” to life by creating their perfect Wedding Day. This includes organizing and putting together an ornate amount of decoration including tons of beautiful (and often very expensive) florals. Usually the centerpieces are given away to guests and/or family members after the ceremony while miscellaneous decor such as archway pieces, ceremony florals and cocktail table florals are often just discarded and many times tossed. Erika and I had the brilliant idea of donating these florals to Seniors who could use a little cheering up and Children in the Cancer Ward of Kapiolani Medical Center.  Before their wedding, we spend a little time talking with each of our couples about possible donations and coordinate which flowers they would be willing to donate.  Then we contact the Kapiolani Medical Center and Manoa Senior Care facilities to let them know we will have florals for them on a specific date and time.  They let their staff know a special delivery is coming and ask them to figure out which of their patients could use a little cheering up. After the ceremony, we take the designated florals and touch them up (and put them into smaller vases if needed). We add personalized note cards and sign them from Best Day Ever and “Mr & Mrs. XXX” and then we add a little toy or stuffed animal for the children and hand deliver to Kapiolani Medical Center.  With Manoa Senior Care, we make a personalized trip to each of the care homes and spend some time visiting with the seniors and presenting the florals arrangements. It is really a joy and they love spending time with us.  These short simple visits and tiny gifts really make a huge difference in so many lives.. and we feel lucky to be able to be a part of this.

Much thanks to Lisa Chung of Kapiolani Medical Center and Robert Nogami of Manoa Senior Care for all of your assistance and coordination. We will be posting pictures in the upcoming months of our “Share the Aloha” visits. And also, a big thank you to all of our couples who have so graciously made the beautiful floral donations.

Personalized Wine Charms Wedding Favors

These are to die for… Personalized Handmade Wedding Wine Charms. Wouldn’t it be so cute to see your name written in wire hanging from your wine glass? I love it i love it i love it!  You could even use them as napkin rings or put them around a jar of homemade jelly or candy or cookies – the possibilities are endless.  Super cute, but keep in mind, this sort of project, is really a ton of work!  If your even considering doing it yourself.. let me tell you, it is not as easy as it looks.  Trust me, i’m the do-it-yourself queen & i’ve tried it. Just some wire and jewelry pliers – easy – I thought.. No way, its a lot tougher than it looks. However, if your super patient & the creative type, by all means, go for it! If not, you can find them here on Etsy: $110 for 22 charms ($5 a piece) – so worth it. She even gives discounts on orders over $100. Check out her Wedding Charm Store today.

Just a little tip on super cute wedding favors – from your favorite Hawaii Wedding Planner – Best Day Ever!

Restless – An Unusual Love Story

Young, charming & beautiful Annabel (Mia Wasikowska) is dying of terminal brain cancer.  Young, innocent & perhaps even prettier Enoch (Henry Hopper – son of Dennis) crashes funerals, has been kicked out of school and spends most of his time hanging out with Hiroshi – a ghost & Japanese kamakaze pilot. Sounds a bit off the edge right?

Well – before you write Restless off… let me remind you that the movie is directed by the famed Gus Van Sant who has been known for having an innate ability to capture the essence of young love. Van Sant has directed Oscar projects such as Good Will Hunting, Milk and My Own Private Idaho.

I’ll be honest, it was the director who first caught my eye.. but despite the quirkiness, Restless is a touching and innocent love story that titters between love and pain. The characters are beyond likable and as you learn each of their stories, you really gain an understanding and connectedness towards each of them.  I was in tears at the end of it.. but left with a feeling of hopefulness and gratitude.  I’m not sure I’d say this is Oscar worthy – but overall, I found Restless to be an unexpected joy.  It reminded me somewhat of a modern day Harold & Maude.  And for $1 at your local Red Box.. You can’t beat it! 4 Stars.. Highly Recommended.

“Mrs. to Be” Wedding Hangers

Handmade, wood & wire “Mrs —-” wedding hangers make the perfect bridal shower gift. Or if you don’t get one for your shower, buy one for yourself … and for your bridesmaids! They are super cute and have an old fashioned vintage feel-  I’m totally in love with them.  As a soon to be bride, it can be really fun to see your new name – written out with your wedding gown hanging underneath. Personalized hangers also photograph beautifully and for a mere $18.50 – you can’t beat the price! You can even get them with pearls along the side for $10 more. Check out this site on Etsy to order or browse through Etsy with a search of “wooden wedding hangers” to find tons of other designers who do similar styles.
