Sky Lanterns Banned in Hawaii

Brides wanna know…  what’s the deal with Sky Lanterns (aka Fire Lanterns) in Hawaii?  Are the allowed?  Are the legal?  What’s the story?

Being in the wedding business, it’s our job to know all the state laws regarding Sky Lanterns (aka Fire Lanterns) and well, anything wedding connected I suppose… so heres the deal.  As of last week, Sky Lanterns have been officially banned in Hawaii.  Erica from the Wall Street Journal (yes, the Wall Street Journal – how very exciting right?!!)  actually contacted us to get some feedback on how this new law would affect the wedding industry.  Do brides really care? and how will Hawaii brides feel about this new rule?

Well, if you didn’t already know what Sky Lanterns are, they’re biodegradable lanterns that float up and into the sky when you light an open flame underneath of them.  They are often used at weddings, guests fill them with good wishes before they let a bunch of them free to float up into the sky.  It’s a beautiful sight and a wonderful idea of something fun you can have all of your guests participate in.  Well, except for one thing – they’re a fire hazard.

sky lanterns, sky lanterns banned in hawaii, hawaii sky lanterns

They are supposed to only be lit if there are “no winds”.  If you are lucky enough to live here in Hawaii, you know that it is very unlikely that there is ever a day (or time in the day) where there is zero winds. In fact, most days have trade winds at 15-20mph.  This is what keeps the island so breezy and cool.

Sky lanterns fly because of an open flame, which burns for approximately 4 minutes… if they can fly peacefully for that amount of time they will just burn out.  They’re made of biodegradable material so when they land, they just disintegrate – Nice and easy, clean and simple.  BUT here’s the catch, the chances that they will not get picked up by a gust of wind here in Hawaii are very slim, as are the chances that they might start a brush fire.  And now, because of this, they have been officially (and legally) banned.

We hope that didn’t ruin any great wedding plans you might have had – there are plenty of other wonderful things you can do with guests in place of lighting sky lanterns.  Plus, take it from us, the last thing you want to have to deal with is starting a brush fire on your wedding day!

We’d love to hear your thoughts.  Leave us a comment!

Best Day Ever Hawaii

Congratulations Greg and Sandy! Halekoa Hotel, Oahu, Hawaii ~ 7.12.12

I loved Sandy from the moment I first spoke with her on the phone.  She was so sweet and genuine and will be one of our dearest friends for a long time! It was a complete pleasure and honor to coordinate and design her wedding and the day couldn’t have turned out more beautiful.

Sandy and Greg tied the knot exactly a week ago today at the Halekoa Hotel in Waikiki ~ Oahu, Hawaii.  I always do a blog post on our brides special day and this one was especially sweet because we were with Sandy from day one … before she even choose the venue.  To see everything come together and the love shine between Sandy and Greg when their big day finally arrived was something we will never forget!

Of course we couldn’t have done it without the help of an entourage of very amazing vendors.  Charline and Danny at the Halekoa were the best, completely helpful and always on top of everything.  With all the outdoor weddings we’ve been doing lately, Erika and I had forgotten just how wonderful a great hotel staff can be ~ We really do appreciate everything you have done for Sandy:) Todd from Always Flowers ~ WOW! Is really all I can say.  The ceremony gazebo with all the jewels, the centerpieces, the floral head pieces and omg – the bouquet! You are so amazing and we can’t wait to work with you again! Todd does the best Hawaii Wedding Flowers~ seriously! If you are looking for a florist, you have to check him out. Matt and the crew from Mystical Sound DJs and Production, you guys were so easy to work with and had the entire crowd on the dance floor – it was a pleasure!  Cathy and the Te Vai Ura Nui tahitian dancers and musicians, we couldn’t believe the show you put on.  This was really such a treat for all the out of town guests… we will definitely be calling you again, the entire experience you created with your show was nothing short of extraordinary! Te Vai Ura Nui is without question the best of Tahitian and hula here on O’ahu! Keoni from KPix Hawaii thank you so much for a wonderful job! We loved how you were able to take charge of the group and we can’t wait to see your shots! Cynthia Smoot from Mrs Minister was Sandy and Gregs officiant, and she was  so sweet and held a very sentimental and beautiful ceremony that had many of the guests in tears:) Thanks Cynthia!  The cake…  OH the CAKE!  It was amazeballs! Just scroll down and check out the photos!  I can’t even put into words how beautiful it was!  Paradise Pastries really blew this one out of the park ~ Talk about making a big impression!  And last but not least, Gemina from Faith and Beauty.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sandy look more beautiful.. You did a spectacular job ~ but again, you always do! Thanks Gemina!

A huge Mahalo to all of you who helped us make Sandy and Gregs day so wonderful! And to all the family and friends who helped as well~ We really appreciate it and it was such a pleasure to meet all of you!  Thank you for making us feel like family:)

A big hug & Congrats to Sandy and Greg!♥  It is obvious how in Love you are and you both deserved this so much!  I couldn’t imagine a more perfect day for both of you.  We love you both ~ Nicole & Erika (Best Day Ever, Hawaii Wedding Planners)

Sneak Peek ~ Hawaii Wedding Shoot with Franco Salmoiraghi

Here’s a sneak peek into our Hawaii Wedding shoot with Franco Salmoiraghi.  I don’t usually post too many personal photos but I’m pretty excited about this shoot with Franco and couldn’t help but share.  My husband and I actually got married last November but unfortunately on our actual wedding day it was extremely windy and we ended up a little overwhelmed with the emotion of the day so at the last minute, we decided to save the portraits for another time.  Turns out this “another time” ended up being months later~ but on a perfect day at Kualoa and without the added emotion and intensity of the actual wedding day.  The entire experience was wonderful and I would encourage any bride that is unsure about having enough time to capture Hawaii Wedding Portraits on their actual wedding day to go ahead and just save them for another day.  It’s really a great way to take a little pressure of an already very jam-packed day, and usually a very overwhelmed bride and groom.

Right, so here you go, a sneak peak into our shoot with Franco.  Keep in mind this is just a peak, as most of the shots were done in black and white on film… and are to come later.  Super excited to see how the rest of the pics turned out but for now… he just sent us a few and is keeping us guessing:) PS> Franco’s my father in law, as well as a pretty well known photographer here in Hawaii. Lucky me!wedding shoot, franco salmoiraghi, nicole and kenji wedding shoot, franco salmoiraghi, nicole and kenji wedding shoot, franco salmoiraghi, nicole and kenji

Completely un-photoshop’d and pretty amazing as is. Can’t wait to see the rest!

For those of you looking for a great place to do a photo shoot here on Oahu, Kualoa is a wonderful spot.  The mountains on this side of the island are gorgeous and the ocean turquoise blue.  Plus, this spot is located right in front of Chinamans Hat!

Stay Tuned ~ More to come!

DIY Mondays ~ How to use Hawaii’s Foliage to create a Beautiful Tropical Light

We love this DIY project found on one of our favorite blogs OnceWed which teaches you how to create a beautiful tropical light with leaves found right in our own backyard.  Here in Hawaii, we have tons of tropical foliage everywhere, why shouldn’t we incorporate these beautiful plants into our weddings?  Here’s a simple step by step on exactly how to create this light for yourself.

hawaii foliage, tropical light, diy, diy wedding

PHOTO CREDIT: Once Wed- DIY Tropical Leaf

How to create a light from Monstera Leaves:

Step 1: Get the wire frame from a standard (large) white paper lantern
Step 2: Find two giant monstera leaves and wire them around the frame, making sure to secure the edges and keep the pendant round.
Step 3: Wanna get fancier?  Hang it from a metallic gold rope and secure with a nice little knot. You could even hang a vintage/edison clear light bulb if you have the electrical wiring around or it can be off the grid if you use a little battery-powered click-on LED light.

This DIY tropical Monstera leaf pendant light would be a great addition to any destination wedding, or Hawaii wedding.  The best part – it’s super simple to do! They would look great with natural wood tables and simple tropical centerpieces.

Hope you enjoyed today’s DIY tip~ Happy Monday!

How to make your Hawaii Wedding Memorable by incorporating Graphic Design

Adding a few key graphic elements to your wedding can make all the difference.  If you really want to “wow” guests and create a wedding that is uniquely yours, adding wedding graphic design is a really classy and fun way to do it!  A few small graphic elements can be subtle, but they will really help pull your entire theme, colors, and the overall look and feel of your wedding together.  And you’ll be surprised how these little touches can make such a big impact.  This is why we offer a few simple hawaii wedding graphic design packages to each of our couples.  Today’s inspirational post comes from a very special bride who’s wedding day is ~ today!  Congrats Sandy & Greg! We can’t wait for the festivities to begin!

Sandy loves pink!  So, I worked with Sandy to create a design that I like to call a Hawaii Pink Fairytale…   think Pink centerpieces, Pink petals everywhere, Pink everything!  We can’t wait to show you the pictures but for now, you’ll just have to wait and check out the graphics that I helped Sandy with to help bring her Hawaii Pink Fairytale Wedding to life..

Sandy and Greg are getting Married at the Halekoa Hotel in Waikiki. This is the sign for outside the Ceremony.

hale koa hotel, hale koa wedding, oahu wedding, hawaii wedding, greg and sandy, best day ever hawaiiSpecial guests, had reserved seats, so I created special signage for each of the guest seats. Reserved for signs make guests feel extra special.. and they helped to bring the pink theme together. graphic design, sandy and gregFollowing the ceremony the party will continue up in the Halekoa’s Waikiki Ballroom.  Carefully placed signage will help direct guests where to go.graphic design, sandy and greg

A few of Sandy’s closest friends will be in charge of the sign-in table at the ballroom, but I created a few signs that will be framed to help direct guests to know what to do.  Keeping your guests aware of what is going on at all times with little signs is a fun way to keep the party festive and guests entertained.

graphic design, sandy and gregSmall signs will be placed in each of the bathrooms… a super cute way to let your guests know you care.  It’s the little things that they will remember! I promise you:)  I also did a few “Tips” signs for the bar. Of course, incorporating the same pink vintage-feel background for all to bring the entire theme together.

hale koa hotel, hale koa wedding, oahu wedding, hawaii wedding, greg and sandy, best day ever hawaiiBar signs are a fun way to let guest know the drink options. Sandy and Greg opted to have drink tickets instead of a completely open bar. Check out fun wedding drink tickets below…graphic design, sandy and gregDrink tickets can be a fun way to bring your theme together AND can save you money by limiting the amount of drinks you purchase for your guests.graphic design, sandy and greg

Of course, I also framed a few photos of the lovely couple to be placed strategically around the ballroom.  After all, this is a celebration of Greg and Sandy!

And finally ~ I did a logo (which of course started with a bunch of logos – which she narrowed down to one)…  Sandy decided she would use as a monogram to be  lit up in Pink ~ Of course!hale koa hotel, hale koa wedding, oahu wedding, hawaii wedding, greg and sandy, best day ever hawaii

I hope you enjoyed our little peak into how wedding Graphic Design can impact your wedding in a big way. With each of our couples being so different, I design the look and feel based around the couple. What colors are their wedding, is there anything unique about the couple that I can design into the pieces.. etc. The basic package starts out at just $350. Printing and framing included.

We’d love to hear your comments and thoughts!  But for now.. it’s time to head out to a wedding:)

Cymbidums, also look great in high big buns! Added bonus, the flowers stayed fresh and pretty much perfect the entire night!

Fresh flowers are a simple way to make a big impact!  They look great in photos and really add a that extra “wow” factor.  Do a few test runs and make sure you are prepared for your big day so there are no surprises or mess-ups.  Also, don’t forget, fresh flowers need to be kept in water for as long as possible, so keep them off of your hair and in a cool area dipped in water until right before the ceremony for the best lasting effect.  (Just as a side note, orchids and cymbidums are ideal for hair accents, they look fresh for HOURS!) I hope you’re left feeling inspired!  We sure are!

Leave us a comment, we’d love to hear your thoughts!
