DIY Monday’s ~ Edible Sea Favors PART 2: Madeleine Shells

I hope you enjoyed last weeks Edible Sea Glass Favors!  Here’s is the long awaited part 2! I know, I know.. it’s a part of our DIY Monday’s series … and today is Tuesday, but we’re any of you really checking your email yesterday when it was a holiday? My guess is probably not! So.. yes, I saved it for today:)

How I came across Madeleine Shells ~ the perfect beachy themed wedding favor…  After a long day I was craving something simple and sweet.  I thought a cookie would be just the thing!! I dropped by a small local bakery and came across madeleines, french butter cookies. Looking at the freshly baked cookies I was instantly reminded of sea shells!  (Madeleines are traditionally baked in scalloped edged pans)  These golden brown cookies became my newest inspiration for a beach themed wedding favor!

PHOTO CREDIT: 101 Cookbooks- Madeleines Recipe

You can find madeleines pre-made in specialty bakeries or you can try making your own using this highly recommended recipe from 101 cookbooks.  Place one or two madeleines into a clear cellophane bag, tie a blue or beige ribbon and add a seashell shaped tag. Wanna get fancy? What about placing the cookie in a small bag and then putting that smaller bag into a larger bag filled with a little bit of sand and shells and even some sea glass, then tying off with a nice ribbom?  These cookies are elegant enough for a formal wedding and are beautiful enough to display without embellishments. Delicious and simple, magic words for any busy bride! They also go great with last weeks Sea Glass favors! Why not mix them up?

Give these beauties a try and let us know how you like them! 🙂

Happy Tuesday everyone! Hope you had a fabulous long weekend!!

DIY Monday’s ~ The Kissing Clothes Pin

I love DIY’s that take ordinary household items and turn them into something entirely unexpected!  Brooklyn Bride was looking for a unique cake topper and made an easy peasy DIY project that transformed a simple clothes pin into an adorable kissing bride and groom.  It’s creative, functional and versatile perfect for our crafty Hawaii brides!!

  1. diy, diy mondays, kissing clothes pin, diy weddingStart off with a large clothespin.  On half of the pin sketch with a pencil a tuxedo with a bow tie, on the other half sketch a wedding dress.
  2. Sketch accessories and facial expressions (Be creative!!)
  3. Using acrylic paint, paint over sketches
  4. Finish off by gluing a piece of lace for the bridal veil and you’re done!diy, diy mondays, kissing clothes pin, diy wedding

French Macaroon Wedding Favors

I recently went to Eat the Streets, a local food festival in Hawaii that goes on once a month. Being that it was my first time I was almost overwhelmed with all of the food options! My friends and I couldn’t decide on one place for dinner but when it came to dessert we were all in agreement it had to be French Macaroons!!

french macaroon, wedding favors

These small baked meringue cookies and soft centers have been a huge trend recently, especially in weddings. Imagine one, two or three of these little beauties in a simple clear box with a simple ribbon that matches the colors of your wedding.

There are tons of flavors to choose from and a variety of colors to mix and match! What I love most is that they won’t melt so they can also be easily packaged ahead of time too!  Choose a clear cellophane bag or a clear plastic box then top it off with a ribbon and a cute DIY paper orchid or a favor tag that has your initials on it.  Super cute right? And don’t forget you can choose flavors that match the colors of your wedding too! White’s go with everything, but if you’ve got a blue theme’d wedding going on, why not ask your baker if she can do blue french macraroons?  French macaroons make beautiful favors that are easy to eat, gorgeous to look at and oh so tasty!!

Wondering where you can get these fab favors here in Hawaii?  Here’s a Best Day Ever insider tip: Try CakeWorks Hawaii, in Honolulu (right across from the Hawaiian Humane Society), they have delicious one of a kind Hawaii-inspired flavors. Other local shops that have French Macroons…  Honolulu Coffee Company (Ala Moana), The Pacific Place Tea Garden (Ala Moana), or Patisserie Palme D’Or (Ala Moana).

And for our favorite Hawaii DIY brides . . .  Here’s our favorite DIY Recipe for French Macaroons.

Do you love these as much as I do?  I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🙂

Who is Colins Kawai? Colins is one of our favorite vendors and someone we have grown to really care about.  He is the extremely nice and super easy going.  He is also the owner of Choco le‘a!  Our favorite Hawaii Wedding Chocolate station.  He is really amazing at what he does and loves working with his customers to create pieces that are uniquely theirs.  Want to know more? I know you do!!

Here’s more of our interview with Colins…

What makes your chocolate different?  Our specialty is gourmet, European dark chocolate truffles.  We are chocolate purists, which mean that we refrain from using artificial flavors, colors, powders, or additives, whenever possible.  We use local flavors, such as mochi, haupia, and lychee to create our designer truffles and offer a complete cocktail bar of liqueur truffles, including assorted premium wines, beers, and other spirits.

What kind of experience will the bride and groom have if they hire you? How about their guests?   The bride and groom will feel like royalty at their wedding.  We work closely with our couples asking a lot of questions, and being very attentive to the details.  We will take what we learn to design unique flavors that will create a custom designer chocolate menu for their family and guests.  And, if they come up with a unique flavor, we will name that truffle after them.   We will be their personal chocolatier taking care of the set-up, staffing, clean-up and assistance in answering any questions for them and their guests.

What do your prices start at and what do they include?   We believe in pricing our chocolates affordably.  We offer three prices, $6, $9, and $12 per person.  Our starting price would include free consultations, plus our designer truffle bar/chocolate buffet with up to a dozen truffle varieties, plus dipped cookies and fruits, in season.  Our premium package would include extravagances, such as our Dom Perignon champagne truffles etc.  We would also include a mini-version of our signature truffle bar/chocolate buffet at their bridal shower at no additional cost, among quite a few royal extras.

What have guests said about your chocolates?
Guests are simply amazed by our royal wedding signature truffle bar/chocolate buffet which is designed for lovers of chocolate and chocolate aficionados.

(He’s right – we have seen first hand how much guests fall in love with these chocolates.. think Honolulu Chocolate Company quality but better!  It’s an easy way to make a big impression on guests!)vendor spotlight, chocolea, chocolate, wedding dessert, dessert

Do you do tastings?

Yes, we do make and provide samples.  In addition, we also will host chocolate-tasting parties, which are a LOT of fun!  Our minimum fee is just $300 for a small, intimate group.  Our standard fee starts at $450.

If you have a sweet tooth, the Choco le‘a Chocolate Station could be the perfect solution for your wedding. Extremely elegant, these chocolates always are a big wow factor… We have even seen Colins create solid chocolate frames which held the couples engagement photos.  How cute is that?!

Inspiration Tuesdays: Rustic Weddings

Rustic Weddings are so chic these days! We have had so many brides say they wanted their wedding to be “rustic” we just couldn’t help but share this gorgeous wedding featured in one of our favorite blogs Ruffled.

If you’re a DIY bride, you’re boing to love this wedding, it was a true labor of love by the bride – Camryn, her husband – Brian, and their friends. Nearly every detail was executed as a DIY project inspired by blogs like Ruffled. We’re absolutely LOVING all the details that went into this wedding and the personalization is out of this world! The bridal party even used an actual school bus as their transportation, in a fitting nod to the couple’s respective careers as school teachers! This is just an amazing wedding and gorgeous couple!  Best Day Ever wishes a very happy Wedding and Congrats to Camryn and Brian! Enjoy the photos!

Happy Earth Day!

Eco-Friendly Weddings are the new shabby chic! In honor of Earth Day, we would like to share our Top 7 Eco-Friendly Wedding Tips…

Tip1:  Eco-Friendly Favors!  Check out these Nature Bird Seed favors from Etsy.  Super cute hearts made of birdseed and biodegradable material make the perfect wedding favors.

Tip2:  Plant a Tree!  Encourage guests to start an herb garden or plant a tree by giving each guest a mini herb plant as a special wedding gift. Growing your own plants and herbs at home saves money, gas, and tons of waste!

Tip3: Choose an Eco-Friendly Venue.  Check out venues that are earth-friendly.  One that comes to mind here on Oahu is the Loulu Palm who has recycling bins they encourage you to use onsite. Ask each venue if they are eco-friendly and what efforts they are making to be so.

Tip4: Buy a Second-Hand Dress.  Have you seen some of the gorgeous vintage gowns at If not you have to check them out! Posh Girl Vintage also has some great pre-owned dresses, like the one shown below.

Tip5: Use Real Dishes.  Using real chinaware, silverware, cloth napkins, glasses and tablecloths (that can be washed and re-used) will save tons of trash and will look so much more elegant!  Check out our website for vintage chinaware rentals!

Tip6: Eco-Friendly Wedding Sites.  Check out: Intimate Weddings, Eco-Beautiful Weddings, and Eco and Elsie for great earth-friendly wedding tips and tricks! Here are some great tips posted from Eco and Elsie.

Tip7: Donate centerpiece florals. Rather than letting those gorgeous centerpieces go to waste, why not donate them to a Children’s Hospital or Senior Care Home? Best Day Ever has just introduced their “Share the Aloha” program in which we will handle the floral pick-up and drop off and all the details and coordination.  It’s your choice, you can donate one arrangement or 30 arrangements. We have set up a program with the children’s cancer floor at Kapiolani Medical Center and the four Senior Care Homes in Manoa in which we contact them ahead of time and schedule visitations.  We even create cards from you “Mr. & Mrs. Jones” and Best Day Ever, printed on recycled paper -to go with each arrangement.  The florals are hand-delivered by Erika and I and used to make someone else smile for the next few weeks. Wishing everyone a very Happy EARTH DAY!!
